The collection of Baron Denys Cochin

Bonnard
Summer in Normandy
1912 · Canvas, 114 × 128 cm
See in the collectionThe terrace of Ma Roulotte, the house Bonnard had just bought at Vernonnet, under an awning, with the view towards Giverny, Marthe in a deckchair and a dog at her feet, painted in 1912[1]. The 1985 catalogue of the Soviet museums opens its provenance with “D[enys] Cochin collection, Paris”, before Bernheim-Jeune in 1913[2]. Denys Cochin thus had it the very year it was painted, and let it go at once; it is the one Bonnard the family counts[3].
In his hands: Came in 1912 · Left in 1913, to Bernheim-Jeune
Today: At the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, Ж-3356, which came in 1918 from the collection of Ivan Morozov, for whom it was one of the last Bonnards bought, with the great panels of his staircase[1]. Morozov, on Diaghilev’s advice, had gone to the rue de Babylone to see how Maurice Denis painted[4].
