The collection of Baron Denys Cochin

Corot
Farmyard, Trees (Peasant Houses at Fontainebleau)
1860-70 · Canvas, 55.9 × 46.3 cm
See in the collectionRobaut’s no. 1316, bought from Bosman of The Hague, sold to Baron Denys Cochin on 15 January 1903 for 35,000 francs and taken back twelve days later at the same price by Boussod, Valadon et Cie, who sold it again in 1909[1]. Under that number Robaut describes peasant houses at Fontainebleau, 55 by 45, from de Knyff and Clapisson to the dealers Beugniet, Durand-Ruel and Sedelmeyer; his plate shows a yard, a woman on a ladder set against a tree, a staircase, a peasant woman sweeping[2]. The Burrell Collection’s Peasant House at Fontainebleau has the same size and the same former owners, de Knyff, Clapisson, Beugniet, Durand-Ruel and Sedelmeyer, though its list names neither Bosman nor Cochin[2, 3].
In his hands: Came on 15 January 1903, from Boussod, Valadon, 35,000 F · Left on 27 January 1903, to Boussod, Valadon, 35,000 F
Today: At the Burrell Collection, Glasgow, 35.61, given by Sir William and Lady Burrell to the city in 1944[3].
