See in the collectionThe houses of the hamlet of Le Château, on the rock above Ornans, painted in 1855: Fernier, no. 175, takes them from the Luquet sale of 1868 to Bernheim-Jeune in 1904, then to Baron Denys Cochin, to Hébrard, to the Prince de Wagram, to Durand-Ruel, to Knoedler, to the Rockefeller sale in New York of 24 March 1938, to Paul Rosenberg and to Stillman[1]. Sold before the Prince de Wagram’s death, in 1918, it is not in the sale of 1919[1].
In his hands: Came about 1904, from Bernheim-Jeune · Left about 1918, to Hébrard
Today: In a private collection: with Emil Georg Bührle in Zurich when Fernier appeared, in 1977[1]. The Ragghianti foundation’s photo library keeps an old photograph of it, “collezione Emile Bührle”, 96.5 × 122 cm[2]. It is not among the three Courbets of the Bührle foundation in Zurich[3].
