The collection of Baron Denys Cochin

Degas
Woman with a Parasol (In the Tuileries Gardens)
vers 1870-1880 · Canvas, 27 × 20 cm
See in the collectionA woman in black, her face hidden by the parasol she holds in her gloved hand, walking with a companion in the Tuileries or at a racecourse, a small canvas barely covered which Degas nonetheless signed[1]. Pickvance dates it 1870-71 and follows it from the dealer Manzi to Denys Cochin, then to Jules Strauss and to Reid & Lefevre in London, who sold it to Sir William Burrell[2]. It is not in the sale of 1919: Denys Cochin had parted with it in his lifetime[2].
Today: At the Burrell Collection in Glasgow, 35.234, “In the Tuileries Gardens”, about 1880, given by Sir William and Lady Burrell to the city in 1944, in storage[1]. The museum devotes a person record to Baron Denys Cochin for this picture’s history and quotes Vollard there: “he bought for pleasure, he was never mistaken in his choice, all his pictures were of the first order”[3].

« In the Tuileries Gardens. Edgar Hilaire Germain Degas. Circa 1880. Oil on canvas. Unframed 272 x 204 mm. Here we glimpse a woman, her face shielded by the parasol she holds in her black-gloved hand, walking with a companion. The two women are probably walking in the fashionable Tuileries Gardens, although it is also possible that they are at a race-course. Gifted by Sir William and Lady Burrell to the City of Glasgow, 1944. Burrell Collection: Pictures. ID number 35.234. In storage. »

« Baron Denys-Marie-Pierre-Augustin Cochin is part of the provenance/ownership history of Sir William Burrell’s collection for the work entitled “Woman with a Parasol”, by Edgar Degas. As the art dealer Ambroise Vollard stated, on recalling Cochin’s collection: “Denys Cochin bought for pleasure … he was never mistaken in his choice … all his pictures were of the first order. What an incomparable museum might be created with all that was once in his possession”. »
