An Interior
See in the collectionBought from Vollard and brought back the same day, for not sitting with the rest of the drawing room: no title, and absent from the catalogue’s page on his collection[1, 2]. None of the thirty-one canvases the catalogue knows of his is an interior returned the same day: the Card Players went on to Durand-Ruel, not back to Vollard[3], and The Sideboard, the only interior scene, went back to Vollard only on 20 October 1904, in exchange for the Still Life with Chest of Drawers that came in that day[4]. A purchase returned within the day leaves no trace in a stock book; Vollard’s memory stands alone[1].

Quel dommage! — C’est très simple! lui dis-je. Je le reprends... »
