The collection of Baron Denys Cochin
Derainnot found
A Derain
See in the collectionBought from Vollard in May 1906, with the two Matisses, untitled in the dealer’s archives[1]. Folio 93 of the register, where another entry is dated 17 May 1906, gives it neither title nor measurements[2]. The dealers’ receipts and invoices of the collection, a hundred and twenty photocopied pages at the Getty Research Institute, could name it[3]. In November 1919, after the sale, a journalist of Le Petit Parisien still saw in the rue de Babylone “an unexpected copy of Ghirlandaio by Derain”: if it is the Derain of 1906, it copies Ghirlandaio[4].
In his hands: Came in May 1906, from Vollard
