A chemist. With Marcellin Berthelot he wrote, in 1862–1863, three papers in which the notions of a limited reaction and of chemical equilibrium appear for the first time. He died of tuberculosis in Cannes, aged thirty-one; his daughter Hélène would marry Denys Cochin.
